The ParkinSongsters Film

"The ParkinSongsters" a little film about the large benefits of singing for people with Parkinson's.

The film follows The ParkinSongsters through group practice sessions, public concerts and individual interviews. It's aim is to demonstrate the therapeutic benefits singing has in helping people with Parkinson's, not only through the sheer enjoyment of singing, but by helping to improve physical side-effects of the disease, such as speech and swallowing difficulties.

The film, funded by The Big Lottery, shows the courage and determination of those with Parkinson's to stay as well and active for as long as possible.

"I'm absolutely certain that if I hadn't been singing with the ParkinSongsters for the last five years my condition today would be much worse.... and it is great fun too!" Julie White

The ParkinSongsters

Shaping Voices are delighted to be the recipients of an Awards For All grant, providing funding for The ParkinSongsters project. We will make a film about the group demonstrating the positive benefits of singing for people with Parkinson's disease. Filming begins in February and ends with a public performance, also to be filmed, of the group singing a selection of their favourite songs. The performance will take place in late May/early June, followed by a Film launch in early Autumn.

The ParkinSongsters was set up in 2010 to serve people with Parkinson’s and their carers living in the Hastings & Rother Districts of East Sussex. The group provides breathing and vocal exercises to help improve speech and swallowing problems, as well as singing songs to strengthen the voice. Alongside the beneficial physical effects of the weekly sessions, members have discovered how uplifting singing can be! The group performs in a number of informal settings, ranging from tea-time concerts, celebratory events, to Carols in the Conquest Hospital

A celebration event for the 2011 Creative Workshops particpants

Saturday 26th November 2011
The Education Suite, De La Warr Pavilion
De La Warr

Celebration for the Creative Arts Workshops, an enriching time working with 10 groups of enthusiastic individuals exploring the various art forms offered. The feedback was tremendously positive. The event was an opportunity to meet members from other groups; to see and to listen to presentations of some of the work achieved in the sessions and to discuss further ideas about future arts training for older people in East Sussex.
